The LaOur group at ETH Zurich employs advanced synthetic biology techniques to transform human cells into next-gen therapeutics aimed at combating cancer, metabolic conditions, neurodegenerative, autoimmune, and infectious diseases. Through state-of-the-art platforms, including novel biosensors, gene switches, and genetic closed-loop circuits, as well as sophisticated chemical structures that interact and activate cellular functions, we create programmable cellular implants and nanocatalytic devices. These are capable of responding to extensive biochemical signals like glucose, ATP, and disease biomarkers, as well as physical stimuli such as light, electromagnetic fields, and acoustic signals.
