Internship - Migration from Custom RPC to gRPC with Automation (Quarkus/Spring Boot)

We are looking for a proactive intern to help modernize our application communication protocols. The intern will be responsible for migrating a custom RPC protocol (based on HTTP and Java serialization) to the industry-standard gRPC protocol. The role includes implementing automated migration recipes using OpenRewrite and, optionally, exploring generative AI prompts to propose alternative migration strategies.

YOUR ROLE

  • Analyze the current custom RPC protocol and identify migration steps to gRPC.

  • Develop and test automated code transformation recipes with OpenRewrite.

  • Refactor Quarkus/Spring Boot codebases to use gRPC for inter-service communication.

  • Document the migration process and best practices.

  • Optionally, research and experiment with generative AI to suggest or automate migration alternatives.

  • Present findings and recommendations to the Application Frameworks team.

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.

  • Solid understanding of Java and Spring Boot.

  • Interest in distributed systems, RPC, and modern communication protocols.

  • Experience with or willingness to learn gRPC and OpenRewrite.

  • Analytical, autonomous, and eager to learn.

  • Fluent in English and French;

  • Resident in Switzerland or willing to relocate to Switzerland.
